!!SOLD OUT!! The biogs remind us that Martin Carthy influenced Bob Dylan, who re-worked Scarborough Fair as Girl From the North Country, and Paul Simon (whose version with Art Garfunkel made Scarborough Fair a massive international hit) but what we like most about Carthy is that to us he's also a truly local hero who tonight will once again take the high road from Robin Hood’s Bay to Farndale, jewel in the crown of the North York Moors National Park, to renew his acquaintance with The Band Room, aka ‘the greatest small venue on Earth.’

For over half-a-century Carthy has been one of folk music's all-time greats. His technical skill, stage presence and natural charm have earned him trailblazing musical partnerships with Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick, wife Norma Waterson and daughter Eliza Carthy, producing more than 40 albums, 10 of them solo. Whether in the folk clubs, on the concert stage or television - there are few roles Martin Carthy hasn't played.

A ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of other artists’ material, Carthy has always preferred to follow his insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on the prestige of his position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his phenomenal arrangements of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists on both sides of the Atlantic. And he doesn’t have – or need - a website. How cool is that!

“Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all” (Q)

“Carthy is a master of the ballad of substance, songs that tell stories, whether they are traditional, his own or from contemporary writers.” (The Daily Telegraph)
